Day Trip: Hunt for Shark Teeth

Spend time on the Chespeake Bay, hunting for shark teeth at Bayfront Park.

2 hours prior to low tide - Drive to Bayfront Park (38 miles, 1 hour)
  • Admission - 0-2 years is free, 3-11 is $6, 12-54 is $10, 55 and older is $6 (fee only collected from Memorial Day to Labor Day)
  • Find the narrow entrance leading to the small, paved parking lot
  • Walk the paved path to the beach (only walkable at low tide)
  • Go right to explore and find the larger shark teeth (0.5 to 1.0 inch), staying away from the cliffs which have frequent rock falls
  • Take a picnic and eat lunch

Day Trip: Apple Butter Festival

Check out the Annual Apple Butter Festival during the first weekend of October in Berkeley Springs, WV (105 miles, 1 hour 59 minutes).
  • Arrive in time for the parade (9:00 am)
  • Attend the Turtle Race (11:00 am) and Facial Hair Contest (2:50 pm), which are the centerpiece events dating back to the first festival in 1974
  • Eat prize winning apple pie and apple butter
  • Walk around town, visiting various booths and exhibits and eating great food
  • Listen to local "rockabilly" and "old time" bands

Weekend Getaway: George Washington's Footsteps

While we have yet to do this, the following is our plan for spending two days walking the footsteps of our first President of the United States.

ITINERARY:

DAY 1



7:00 am - Drive to the George Washington Birthplace National Monument (69 miles, 1 hour 49 minutes)
  • Admission: free
  • View the exhibits and film in the Visitor Center
  • Walk through the Living Colonial Farm

10:30 am - Drive to George Washington's Ferry Farm (35 miles, 54 minutes)
  • Admission: $8.00 adults, $4.00 students, free ages 6-under
  • See displays of colonial artifacts and the archaeology lab in the Visitor Center
  • Walk the gardens and see the site of George Washington's childhood home overlooking the Rappahannock River

1:00 pm - Eat Lunch


1:30 pm - Drive to Alexandria, VA to Walk in George Washington's Footsteps (52 miles, 1 hour 4 minutes)

  • Tour: free (print out tour guide before you leave for the day)
  • Walk around Alexandria, VA, surveyed and mapped by 16 year old George Washington prior to becoming a city
  • See George Washington's townhouse
  • Also see locations where he socialized, shopped, dined, and worshipped

3:00 pm - Drive to Georgetown to see why George Washington is considered the Father of the C & O Canal (10 miles, 19 minutes)
  • Admission: free
  • Visit the Visitor Center (open mid-April to mid-September)
  • Walk along the C & O Canal and enjoy the views
  • Be sure to stop at Georgetown Cupcake before you end your day

DAY 2




9:00 am - Drive to George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate, Museum & Gardens (15 miles, 29 minutes)
  • Admission: $15.00 ages 12-61, $14.00 ages 62-over, $7.00 ages 6-11, free ages 5-under
  • Visit the Ford Orientation Center
  • Watch the Revoltionary War movie in the Donal W. Reynolds Education Center
  • Walk through the Mansion and its gardens
  • Visits Washington's Tomb, burial place of the Father of our Nation
  • If time, interact with Martha Washington at the Interpretive Center
  • Eat lunch at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant

  • General admission: $5.00; Guided tour (Monday-Saturday at 3:00 pm, first come first serve): $8.00
  • Walk through the memorial and museum dedicated to George Washington and his virtues, character, and vision

4:00 pm - Drive to the Washington Monument
  • End the day at the most prominent structure in Washington, DC
